As the authors describe the book at its inception, it is a collection of short writings about 30 different words which the authors chose as a means of offering themselves and each other some insights to their lives.

The only rules they put forth were that the writing should be brutally honest, they would be written over a 30 day period, and all should be focused on developing a sense of gratitude regardless of how negative the recounted experience was. The authors revealed early on that each came out of a broken relationship and this was their agreed upon way of getting to fully know one another - in a brief time frame.

Despite this agreement, the writing seemed to devolve into some sort of strange competition where one author wrote floridly, used metaphors at every turn, and played with alliteration, I can only guess that she wanted to seem deeper than she really is. Jacq Pollock's writing seems disingenuous, more so in comparison to her counterpart, Rob Martin who tended to have had less to say - not 'the quiet one' he just wrote less, or at least his thoughts apparently were deemed less compelling so they were left out of a few word entries.

Strangely though, Rob gets first billing as the primary author on the internet. Jacq's writing was pretty revealing; she liked to play with words. She simply tried to jam-pack every line with a big word whether it was related or not. She relied heavily on metaphor and alliteration. And her writing style was a strange melding of prose and Haiku - lots of one word sentences.

This is why I wondered throughout the book if Jacq and Rob aren't either one and the same writer, or whether Jacq, in her eagerness to correct Rob decided to take liberties with copy-editing his writing as well.

I find this a little odd because Jacq's Amazon Bio describes her as having English students - whatever that means. Judging from the way this book was written, they don't check for typos, wrong words and grammar in Jacq's classes. Capitalizing and anthropomorphizing anger must be artistic license here. Jacq is an English teacher? So, adrenaline is evoked?

Letters of Gratitude is chocked full of these grammatical faux pas that just don't make sense, no matter how grateful the reader may desire to be. I am grateful for High school grammar. Jacq's florid writing style came off as disingenuous, camouflaged in metaphor, alliteration, cliche and an over-seasoned her word salad straight out of a thesaurus.

While Jacq's opening words for the book were titillating, and offered great promise as to the level of vulnerability. She declared that both her and Rob revealed so much in this page treatise on finding gratitude in the darnedest places. However, not much self disclosure really came out. So, what was my conclusion? My take-away was that I wouldn't sit with Jacq and exchange 30 days of self-disclosure.

It seems to me that this idea, well intentioned - falls short because Jacq was too cautious. It also serves as a reminder that some things - relationships in particular - take time. So, this day self revelation business might be a great place to start. However, my gut tells me that Rob and Jacq still have some pretty big challenges ahead; he seems to be genuine and his words often carry a ring of truth while Jacq is more concerned with swollen sentences that might sound great, but lack substance.

Twitter generation or not, relationships cannot be rushed. Moreover, much as we might like to, we cannot short circuit the process of getting to know one another, especially when one half of the team seems more obsessed with outshining her partner in the wordsmiths arena.
