The weapons were even similar in format, the basic wand acted the same as the pistol, the crossbow was the same as the shotgun etc. The storyline was good and the level design was great. I played it through from start to finish several times and it was always a blast. There was even a hidden chicken mode, in that you could turn all the monsters into chickens and then squish them easily. You could even turn yourself into a chicken! The monsters were good, following a demonic theme similar to doom, on the whole.

Heretic is divided into three episodes, following the player across different realms under D'sparil's control. Players can select any episode they wish when they start a new game, yet it is highly recommended that they are played in order, due to the gradually increasing difficulty and the development of the in-game story. There are 5 different difficulty levels you can choose at the beginning of each episode, ranging from beginner to extreme.

The Shadow of the Serpent Riders expansion pack added two additional episodes that continue the story after the first three. The gameplay is also solid. The weapons react and function as you would expect, exceptionally responsive and make for fun gameplay. It is obsessively fun. The one major disappointment of Heretic is its musical score.

DOOM has been and always will be loved for its combination of demonic gore saturated gameplay and intense satanic music. The two go together like peanut butter and jelly; it adds to the satisfaction of each and every kill. Heretic sadly does not. The musical composition of Heretic is far less intense and does not compliment the gameplay like DOOM.

It really dulls down the excitement of gameplay! Players are used to manning controllers with a plethora of different buttons to control actions. Heretic, by contrast, uses very few keyboard buttons, so player options are far more limited. Most players will need to play this game on its highest difficulty to truly earn the satisfaction of its completion.
