While there is no tangible real market for MySpace accounts, they are most likely also sold on the black market so that spammers and adult friend finder information can be spread via a compromised account. MySpace is very good about trashing accounts that become spam bases very quickly. Although this method costs money, and sometimes a lot of money, they are an option if you have more money than brains. There is nothing new to any of these methods, they are well known techniques, and something that happens on a regular basis. This is an automated process. So, what do you need to get into the account? It turns out, not much. It validates just three pieces of information: name, username, and date of birth. Names are found on the profile itself, and you can discern the username from the URL so, for myspace.
The only tricky part is the date-of-birth, although you can figure that by sleuthing on other social networking sites. Once you have obtained those three pieces of information, you can essentially break into any Myspace account.
Following responsible disclosure best practices, Galloway informed Myspace of the vulnerability in April of this month. The company sent an automated reply, but has otherwise failed to act. This inaction forced Galloway to take action into her hands, and she has publicly disclosed the vulnerability while it still exists. Myspace has a checkered record when it comes to security. Last year, the company confirmed the leakage of million user accounts. Researchers believe this is one of the largest data breaches of all time.
